My Favourite Place in Johor Bahru
- September 9th, 2010
I think I’ve come light years since the day that I drove on the LDP and almost burst into tears because I hated JB so much I didn’t wanna leave KL after that fateful Saturday night. That was probably a good 4 months back. I guess I was somehow expecting an Upper East Side out of a downtown Queens or something. There are no functioning skyscrapers or breathtaking city lights but I guess I’ve learned that civilisation is only a trivial dictation all fascination in life. JB has the faintest glimpse of glitz and glamour but there’s no denying that there are some worthy rough gems here. I find myself slowly basking in the glare of light despite the lack of shine.
Anyway, before I get too carried away and start talking about the moon and the stars, let me introduce to you a quirky little cafe tucked in the middle of nowhere the older part of town called That’s Cafe. If you Google Blog those two words, you’ll probably come across tons of blog entries about this cafe but I’d still like to talk about it bleh!
I first got to know about That’s Cafe when Ah Sher brought a bunch of us (Niyi, Pat, Pin Tet, Cath, Grace) there probably half a year ago. I remember liking it but never went back because everyone else didn’t seem to like it as much as I did. But honestly, my only attraction towards the cafe is the fact that it looks like a bankrupted furniture store from the late 80′s/early 90′s wth. I love how the tables and chairs were randomly matched and the very hippie ambiance. Drinks are okay and I have yet to try the proper courses there.
I think behind the portrayed random sloppiness, a lot of brain cells have been killed in the process of thought. It’s a three-storey shoplot and if you take a careful journey up the narrow stairs, you’ll find that there’s a boutique on the first floor (which apparently just opened) and a supposed salon at the attic. Which I think is damn cool.
The journey to the boutique actually felt more like a trespass because the place was utterly messy when I first went with Yee Ping.
The hidden boutique
The boutique doesn’t boast a humongous number of clothing but a vast majority of them are really pretty (at least to me). Too bad they hardly have guys’ clothing (or any, if I happen to be hallucinating when I thought I saw some guy t-shirts and hoodies).
ANYHOO, I think That’s Cafe is the perfect place to chill out after a long/bad day especially on weekdays when it’s more quiet and almost feel private. Can’t wait to bring more people there (and demand for some commission wth)! Plus point is that it’s relatively near where I’m staying. Negative would be that the lighting is bad for photos.
